Introduction

The University of South Wales fosters a vibrant research culture that underpins all other activities at the institution and is renowned for its applied research. Our aims are to develop our research portfolio in areas of strategic importance, encourage innovation and work with business and Government to help address the challenges facing society and the economy. Our key areas of specialist research include Energy and Environmental Technology, Health and Biological Sciences, ICT and Digital Economy, and Humanities, Creative Industries and Social Sciences.

Intellectual property

The commercialisation of intellectual property generated by our research through licensing to our partners and starting new companies is a key part of the University’s contribution to economic development. The Commercial Services Office supports the University to manage and exploit intellectual property and engage with industrial partners and financial investors. IP and expertise is available for commercialisation in a wide range of areas including: optoelectronics, photonics, mobile and wireless computing and communication, satellite communication, medical imaging, fuel cell systems, anaerobic digestion, hydrogen energy systems, hydrogen storage, combustion engineering.

The University works with a wide range of private, public and not for profit organisations each year and undertakes significant commercial collaboration with world-leading companies such as GDF Suez, Eon, and Tata Steel. Whether it’s a short-term project or long-term investment in research and development, the University offers a diverse range of services to help access our expertise:
